The Next GM
It is very clear that the automotive industry is changing.
For those who know me, you know that I hate the old school tactics of our industry, I hate the way we have treated our customers and employees. Now, we are faced with negative views and stereotypes.
But I think a major change is coming.
If we know the old days are gone, then where will the future lead us? I will agree that new competition entering our space scares people but I believe we can learn from the Carvana’s that are moving into our industry.
Who will lead the new dealership?
It is very obvious that most people hate change. Change is difficult, and at times uncertain. With new blood and young up-and-comers in the industry, it is clear that we won’t let the old ways get in our way.
So, who are the GMs of tomorrow?
I have been operating a BDC since 2011. I live and breathe BDC. It is what I know and what I love, but it is not my goal to stay. I firmly believe that the future GM in the dealership is the BDC Director. For most directors we have our hands in everything from digital marketing, process, desking, inventory, sales training, service, reputation, management, and the list goes on and on.
So, why the BDC Director?
I completely understand there are a lot of moving parts inside a dealership, plus being a GM is more than just managing people. However, the BDC Director already understands and works with every department inside the dealership. All of the moving, money-making parts the BDC Director has a part of. Therefore, the BDC Director is the best option for the future of the industry.
So the question is: when will this happen???
Lots of dealership owners are scared of this due to the unknown. You know the old “we’ve always done it this way” excuse. This is going to take a leap of faith and knowing that things will drastically change. The Old Cardogs will ease themselves out of the business kicking and screaming, and I am sure a few “Millennials killed the business” comments will come out of it also.
We are on the brink of a new era in automotive, with consumers wanting a better experience, who are more educated than ever. With that new era comes new blood and a new way to do business.
So when you need to fill that GM role, you might want to go see your BDC Director.
